Daniel Balderrama's Magnifico Dragon is the fastest qualifier to the January 15, $204,920 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) for New Mexico-bred foals of 2014 at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Mauro Salcedo for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez on Friday, Magnifico Dragon won the fourth of five trials by 1 3/4 lengths from sixth-fastest qualifier First Kool Mon, as the gelded son of Zulu Dragon covered 400 yards in :19.709. Magnifico Dragon was winning for the fourth time in eight starts and pushing his earnings to $254,146.

Magnifico Dragon was bred by Heriberto Moreno. The gelding was coming off of a Zia Park fall campaign during which he won the October 30, 400-yard New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) and ran second in the 440-yard, $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship (G1) on December 4.

Running Dragon, the second-fastest qualifier, won the fifth heat in :19.749. The multiple graded stakes winning homebred daughter of Zulu Dragon was ridden by Adrian Ramos for owner By By JJ LLC and trainer Juan M. Gonzalez.
