Crowson Racing’s promising Zuccardi comes off an impressive, fastest-qualifying trial effort to head the $340,654 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) for New Mexico-breds on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
Zuccardi (Jesse James Jr-Champagne Lane by Lanes Leinster) completely dominated his trial by 2 1/2 lengths after his connections paid the $15,000 supplemental fee to enter the trials. He was timed in :17.258 for the 350 yards.
After a trouble-plagued career debut at Sunland Park, when he finished eighth, Zuccardi raced in the Ruidoso Downs’ schooling races. He won his schooling race by daylight and that effort gave his connections the confidence to pay the supplemental fee to enter the trials.
Jose Ozuna’s Moonstruck Love (First Moonflash-Authorized Love by Dooley Authorized) is another horse who moved forward after a defeat in his first start. After a close fourth-place run at Sam Houston Race Park, he joined the Paul Jones barn at Ruidoso Downs.
Moonstruck Love won his Mountain Top Futurity trial by a neck after dueling with Quemados Version (Winners Version-A Royal Lead by Sixes Royal). Moonstruck Love raced to the second-fastest time of :17.383 while Quemados Version was credited with the fourth-fastest time of :17.413.
Quemados Version came into the Mountain Top trials after a troubled fifth-place finish in the $212,450 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2).
Gary Thompson’s Dungarees Version (Winners Version-Forty One Special by Woodbridge) should gain attention with three wins and a second in the New Mexican Spring Futurity from four starts. The Emilio Cadena III-trained gelding won his Mountain Top trial by 1 1/2 lengths with the sixth-fastest time of :17.462.
Evel Zubiate’s Fire The Queen (Fighter On Fire-Quintessential Queen by Invisible Injun) could be dangerous if she makes the step forward after winning her maiden at first asking in the Mountain Top trials. The Mario Sanchez-trained filly won her trial by 1 ¼ lengths with the third-fastest time of :17.388.
