Press ReleaseMay 30, 2014
Crowson Racing’s Zuccardi, a $15,000 supplement to enter the trials, showed that could be a worthwhile investment by setting the fastest qualifying time to the $340,654 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs on Friday afternoon.
The 10 Mountain Top Futurity trials were for New Mexico-breds, and the horses with the 10 fastest times advanced to the 350-yard final on June 14.
Zuccardi stunned the sixth trial at 6-1 odds when he drew out to a 2 ¾-length win with a :17.258 time for the 350 yards.
It was his first win after finishing a very troubled eighth in his only other start, back in March at Sunland Park.
“He reared up in the gate,” trainer Anna Marie Crowson said of that effort. “Then we ran him in a schooling race here and he won by a length. That’s when we decided to supplement him to these trials.”
Zuccardi, a son of Jesse James Jr, was a $38,000 purchase at last summer’s Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Sale. He is out of top producer Champagne Lane, who is dam of champion Alice K White and former 440-yard world-record holder Kendall Jackson.
“We really like his conformation and attitude,” said owner Dennis Crowson. “He rests all day and knows when it is time to work. He wastes no energy.”
Jose Luis Ozuna’s Moonstruck Love won a duel with Quemados Version in the fifth trial to set the second-fastest qualifying time. Moonstruck Love was clocked in:17.383 while Quemados Version received the fourth-fastest time of :17.413.
The Paul Jones-trained Moonstruck Love finished a close fourth in his only other start. He was beaten by a neck in a Sam Houston Futurity (G2) trial at Sam Houston Race Park.
