Terrific Synergy and Kindly Fellow were outstanding in their 2012 debuts while New Look continued his impressive racing form as all three runners won their respective trials to the Governor’s Cup Derby (RG2) on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Three trials were contested at 400 yards with the horses with the 10 fastest times returning for the final on California Breeders’ Champions Night on Saturday, July 28. Racing for Billy Smith and Pat Guthrie, Terrific Synergy was simply awesome in his first start since running in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1). The son of FDD Dynasty scored a 2 ¼-length victory while blowing away the field with a qualifying time of :19.584. Ridden by G.R. Carter for trainer Cody Joiner, his time was nearly 2/10ths of a second faster than second-fastest qualifier Kindly Fellow.

Terrific Synergy is always terrific in trials. The gelding is now a perfect four out of four in stakes trials and he is also perfect whenever he has tried to qualify to stakes races. In 2011, Terrific Synergy had the rare accomplishment of qualifying to the track’s three richest Grade 1 races – the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, Ed Burke Million Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity. His best finish in those starts has been a fourth in the Ed Burke Million, but he’ll go into the derby final fresh and razor sharp. Terrific Synergy improved his lifetime record to five wins in eight starts.

Racing for Berenisse and Marlyn Gonzalez, Kindly Fellow posted a half-length length win in his sophomore debut. With Cruz Mendez in the irons, Kindly Fellow covered the distance in :19.766 for trainer Guillermo Morales. This was his first start since finishing second in a trial to the Los Alamitos Two Million. PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G2) winner Ima Chickie Two ran second and posted the third fastest time of :19.826.

Mimi Wells’ New Look was sharp in his first outing since winning the El Primero Del Ano Derby (G2) on April 7. Trained by Dan Francisco and ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, New Look posted a half-length wire-to-wire victory while covering the distance in :19.907. New Look has now won four of five starts in 2012.

The complete list of qualifiers is as follows: Terrific Synergy (:19.584), Kindly Fellow (:19.766), Ima Chickie Two (:19.826), New Look (:19.907), Sompin About First (:19.920), Chicks Boudro (:19.943), Eye For FDD (:19.969), Shes Prime Time (:20.061), Pony Drive (:20.065) and Curlie Cue (:20.084).
