Olivas Racing LLC’s fastest-qualifier Streak Hitter and Jose Saul Medina’s $132,883 Sunland Winter Derby (G2) upset winner Feature Mr Lucky meet over 400 yards in a contentious $111,450 West Texas Maturity (G3) on Saturday at Sunland Park.

Streak Hitter (Walk Thru Fire-Chickasis by Chicks Beduino) has won two of his latest three starts with his only defeat coming when he was eliminated at the start of the Sunland Winter Derby and never had a chance to make a run. He was sent off at 7-2 odds in the Winter Derby after impressing with a three-quarter-length win in his trial.

The Luis Rojero-trained Streak Hitter again had trouble at the start of his West Texas Maturity trial, however was able to overcome that slow start and bumping to rally and win by a neck. His time of :19.213 was the quickest time from the four trials.

Feature Mr Lucky (Feature Mr Jess-Mimi Cartel by Corona Cartel) drew the inside post position in the Sunland Winter Derby and all of the trouble was from the three-hole to the outside post position.

Sent off at 19-1 odds, Feature Mr Lucky broke alertly from the gate and raced to the lead. He was able to hold on and win by a nose.

Feature Mr Lucky backed up that effort in the West Texas Maturity trials when he again had a sharp start and took his trial by a half length in the fourth-fastest time of :19.276.

Julio Islas’ Kerrys Wave Carver (Wave Carver-Kerrys Lil Jess by Mr Jess Perry) was second by a neck behind Streak Hitter as the 5-2 favorite. She held the lead in the trial, but was unable to hold off Streak Hitter while posting the second-fastest time of :19.257. The mare gained that favoritism with a game head win in a $50,000 optional-claiming race on January 2 for trainer Gene Burden.
