Separate Thoughts Challenges in Las Damas

Separate Thoughts faces tough older mares in the Las Damas Handicap.

November 16, 2012

Theresa and Edward DeNike’s homebred Separate Thoughts returns after a close second-place finish in the PCQHRA Breeders Derby (G3) to challenge older mares in a contentious $35,000 Las Damas Handicap (G3) over 400 yards on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.

Separate Thoughts (Separatist-A Lil’ Alimony (TB) by Mr. Procrastinator) came back from a summer’s rest to win her trial to the PCQHRA Derby and then run second in the 400-yard derby while being defeated by only a neck. The Pat Visscher-trained filly earned her first stakes win when she won the La Pacifica Handicap in her final start before her layoff.
The Vessels Stallion Farms’ homebred Onemoreglassofwine (Heza Fast Dash-Fine Wines by First Down Dash) took the Elan Again Overnight Handicap two starts ago and then was fourth in the Mildred Vessels Handicap (G1). The veteran mare has past class with a win in the 2011 PCQHRA Breeders Derby (G3) and was third in the 2010 Golden State Juvenile (R).

Mimi Wells’ homebred Getit Together (Separatist-Seronka by Dash Thru Traffic) comes off a length win in an allowance race. Earlier this year, the Dan Francisco-trained mare was second in the Ivan Ashment Handicap (R) and third in the California Breeders Matron Stakes (RG3).

Steve Burns’ homebred Enjoy The Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Enjoy The Moment by Chicks Beduino) fits well at this level as the winner of this year’s California Breeders Matron Stakes, her most recent win on July 28. The Mike Casselman-trained mare was a close second behind Onemoreglassofwine in the 2011 PCQHRA Breeders Derby.
