After coming up a neck short of a 34-1 upset with a second-place finish in the $286,560 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) in September at Fair Grounds, T M Ranch’s Ol Time Preacher Man came through with a nose victory in Saturday’s $1 million LQHBA Breeders’ Futurity (RG1) at Evangeline Downs. Piloted by Danny Lavergne for trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr., the sorrel gelding by Heza Fast Dash broke from post 10 and battled with First Prize Jet from post 9 all the way to the wire before prevailing in a head bob with a 400-yard clocking in :19.711.

"I was happy when we drew the 10 hole; he ran so well from the outside in the trials," said Lavergne. "The horse to my inside ran a big race. We were running head to head, but at 30 yards to the wire, I felt we had it."

This marked the second consecutive win for Ol Time Preacher Man, who broke his maiden in the trials with the third-fastest qualifying time. His earnings now stand at $503,222 with a record of 6-2-2-1.

"This horse put it all together at the right time," added Roberts after winning the stakes for the eighth time in his career. "I thank all my owners for sending me good horses. Steve (Holland of T M Ranch) is a good man; we are lucky to have him in our business."

Jo Baya Foreman bred Ol Time Preacher Man out of the stakes-winning Streakin La Jolla mare JJ Streakin Illusion, who is now the dam of three stakes winners. This victory gave sire Heza Fast Dash a total of 35 stakes winners and his lifetime progeny earnings are now close to $16 million.

Joe Flores’ First Prize Jet, a Jet Black Patriot gelding sent off at odds of 35-1, finished a game second with Rodrigo Vallejo up for trainer Jaime Hernandez. Heza Fast Dash also sired third-place finisher Philips Streakin, a gelding who defeated Ol Time Preacher Man in the LQHBA Sale Futurity. Philips Streakin was ridden by Luis Ramirez for owner Jaime Torres and trainer Fructuoso Huitron.

In the $40,000 LQHBA Breeders’ Futurity Invitational Stakes (R), Oscar Rohne’s Bonnies Jet, a gelding by Jet Black Patriot, scored by a head as the 6-5 favorite with a time of :20.005 for 400 yards. Also ridden by Lavergne and trained by Roberts, Bonnies Jet won for the third time in four starts and boosted his bankroll to $83,949.

Also on the card, First Prize Shaunda earned the first prize in the $50,000 EVD Derby. With Raul Ramirez Jr. aboard, the Oklahoma-bred PYC Paint Your Wagon filly won by a neck with a 400-yard dash in :19.812. First Prize Shaunda, who is owned by Weetona Stanley and was bred by Stanley and W.E. Smith, has won four of her last five starts with her only defeat coming in last year’s Texas Classic Futurity (G1). She earned $30,000 for her first stakes win and now sports lifetime earnings of $66,985.

Brett Mennen’s Ronnie James, a Valiant Hero gelding who won last year’s Firecracker Futurity (G2) at Delta Downs, took second with Don Ming’s homebred I See Visions, a colt by One Famous Eagle, in third.
