Heza Wild Dragon and Threedeewoodee head 10 trials at Ruidoso Downs.

July 6, 2013

The top-two finishers in the $356,980 Mountain Top Futurity (R), Heza Wild Dragon and Threedeewoodee, are back in Friday’s trials to the $409,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.

The horses with the 10-fastest times from the 10 trials qualify for the 400-yard Zia Futurity on July 28. The Zia Futurity sports the largest purse during the Zia Day program celebrating New Mexico-bred racing. More than $1 million in purses is expected to be distributed during the stakes-filled Zia Day program.

First post time for the trial-filled card is 1 p.m. with free parking and free general admission.

Heza Wild Dragon made an impressive late run in the 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity to catch a game Threedeewoodee and win by a nose with a :17.326 time.

The Kristopher Cordova-owned and -trained Heza Wild Dragon is undefeated from two starts. He started his career in the Mountain Top Futurity trials and responded with a three-quarter-length trial win with the second-fastest time of :17.587 for the 350 yards.

A gelding by Genuine Strawfly, Heza Wild Dragon drew the inside post position in the third trial and will have regular rider Esgar Ramirez aboard.

Gary Thompson’s Threedeewoodee is stakes tested with a second in the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) to go with his very competitive second-place run in the Mountain Top Futurity. The Woodbridge gelding, who sold for $39,000 in the Ruidoso Yearling Sale, won his trial to each of those futurities. In his Mountain Top Futurity trial, he won by 2 3/4 lengths for trainer Chris Zamora.

Manuel Guiterrez has been up for each of Threedeewoodee’s four starts and has the riding assignment with the fifth post position in the first trial.

There were two $15,000 supplemental nominees to enter the Zia Futurity trials: Mrs James and Kold Play.

Moises Brito Hernandez’s Mrs James faces Threedeewoodee in the first trial. The Jesse James Jr-sired filly won her only start by one-half length with an :18.082 time for 350 yards.

Jaime Parga Leos rides Mrs James from the eighth post position.

Los Japos Brothers’ Kold Play starts in the ninth trial after finishing third as the even-money favorite in his only start, a Ruidoso Downs maiden race.

A $6,500 Ruidoso Yearling Sale purchase, Kold Play has the fourth post position and Cody Jensen aboard.
