Trainer Paul Jones, who has two sophomore fillies in Saturday night’s La Pacifica Handicap, comes right back on Sunday night at Los Alamitos with three of his older mares among the seven entrants in the $25,000 Miss Princess Handicap (G3).
Jones is represented by Veronica Worth’s Splendiferous Diva (Separatist-Royal Dip by Royal Quick Dash), Abigail Kawananakoa’s Significant Heart (Corona Cartel-Jess Significant by Mr Jess Perry) and Maratha Wells’ Chics On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Tell Me Chics by Chics Beduino).
Splendiferous Diva scored a head win in the $25,000 Denim N Diamonds Handicap Handicap over Cal-bred distaffers on February 22, her most recent start. She was bumped at the start, yet still went to the lead and held on for the close victory. Last fall, she showed promise when she qualified for the $168,500 PCQHRA Breeders Derby.
While Splendiferous Diva comes off a stakes win, Significant Heart defeated Splendiferous Diva when she won the PCQHRA Breeders Derby by one-half length at 16-1 odds. She then went on to win her Z. Wayne Griffin Director’s Trial and that placed her in the $750,000 Champion of Champions. She finished last in the Champion of Champions after a very rough start.
A winner of five of 14 starts, Significant Heart comes off a close third-place run in the $25,000 Katella Handicap when she was beaten by a neck.
Martha Wells’ homebred Chics On Fire comes off a nearly seven-month layoff for the Miss Princess. Her best effort from two victories last year was an upset win in the $25,000 California Breeders Debutante Stakes at 18-1 odds.
Ronald Hartley’s Forgotten Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Icy Morn (TB) by Crowned Jewel) was a close third behind Splendifierous Diva in the Denim N Diamonds and then returned to take an allowance race for trainer John Cooper. In her latest start, she made a strong late bid to finish a close third in a conditioned allowance race.
