Gary and Randal Kurz’s Jody Pops Zoomer raced to a track-record win in his trial to lead the qualifiers to the $394,308 Texas Classic Derby (G1) on Saturday night at Lone Star Park.

Jody Pops Zoomer (Zoomin For Bux-Jody Pops Little Sis by Jody Otoole) scored his first win in 13 months when he won his 440-yard Texas Classic Derby trial in :21.075 to break the 16-year-old track record set by Dashing Perfection. The gelding won at 6-1 odds by 1 3/4 lengths.

Before that career-defining trial win, Jody Pops Zoomer had not won a race for 13 months. His previous win came in his Dash For Cash Futurity (G1) trial and he returned to finish sixth in the finals.

Owned by Melvin Hatley and the Estate of C.W. Navarre, second-fastest qualifier Dashin Brown Streak (Hotdoggin-Annas Streakin Dash by Streakin La Jolla) may be ready to break through with his first stakes win. The gelding has finished second by a head in the $190,000 Evangeline Downs Futurity, second in the Heritage Place Derby (G2) and a close fourth in the $139,000 Firecracker Futurity.

The John Brasseaux-trained gelding showed his readiness in the Texas Classic Derby trials when he sped to a 1 1/4-length win with the second-fastest time of :21.159.

Vicente Contreras’ Captain Strawfly (Captain Courage-Strawfly Lady by Strawfly Special) should be dangerous and could gain favoritism after winning three-straight races, including the $161,500 Dash For Cash Derby (G2) two starts ago. He pulled away to a three-quarter-length win in the derby with a :21.185 time for 440 yards over a sloppy track.

The Anna Marie Crowson-trained gelding came back in his Texas Classic Derby trial to dominate by 1 1/2 lengths with the third-fastest time of :21.182.
