JD Baccarat scored a determined victory in Sunday’s $50,000 KOFX-Radio Handicap (G3) at Sunland Park as the 5-year-old Mr Jess Perry gelding prevailed by a neck under jockey Ricky Ramirez. The Paul Jones trainee covered 350 yards in :16.881 to earn a $30,000 first-place check for owners R. Masterson, R.D. Hubbard, H. Southway, S. Herzog and J. Cope.

Bred in Texas by Julianna Hawn Holt, JD Baccarat is now a two-time Grade 3 winner as he also won the Higheasterjet Handicap last year at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding has placed in three other stakes, including the Ruidoso Derby (G1), and he qualified to the 2010 All American Futurity (G1). All told, JD Baccarat has won seven of 22 starts with a bankroll of $239,890.

21 Partnership’s Zulu Dragon, a two-time Grade 2 winner by First Down Dash, put in a winning effort under jockey Larry Gamez but had to settle for second. Tres Seis Nueve finished third for owner Valle Guadiana Corporation. Grade 1 winner Time For A Cigar, the 2009 champion 3-year-old gelding, finished sixth as the favorite in his first outing since December 2011.
