After winning just once in six starts as a 2-year-old, Richard and Genevieve Herrman’s homebred Iza Sugar N Spice earned her second win in two starts as a 3-year-old as she scored in Sunday’s $43,360 Lucille Rowe Derby (R) for Colorado-breds. Ridden by Jose Montoya and trained by Hipolito Michel-Valverde, the daughter of Toast To Dash covered 350 yards at Arapahoe Park in :17.411 and won by three-parts of a length as the 9-10 favorite and fastest qualifier.

Iza Sugar N Spice, who is out of the stakes-placed Mr Eye Opener mare Iza Flyin Eye, broke her maiden at first asking last year in a trial for the Cherry Creek Futurity (RG3) and then finished sixth in the final. She also qualified to a futurity at Turf Paradise before taking a seven-month break and returning to win her Lucille Rowe trial by 2 ¼ lengths. Her record now stands at 8-3-1-1 with earnings of $30,191.

Jesus Sanchez and Hector Rodriguez’s Avatar 2010, a filly by Ivory James who finished second to Iza Sugar N Spice in the trials, filled that position again in the final. Hugo Barron Sierra’s Glitter Class Corona, by World Class Corona, took third.
