I Azoomed You Knew Wins West Texas Derby

Azoom gelding picks up his third straight win at Sunland Park.

March 29, 2014

Despite not racing as a 2-year-old, Carlos Soto’s I Azoomed You Knew has established himself as a leading 3-year-old before the end of March with a victory in Saturday’s $159,760 West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park. Sent off as 7-5, the Oklahoma-bred Azoom gelding dueled all the way from post 10 and prevailed by a neck with Jaime Leos riding for trainer Juan Gonzalez.

This marked the third win in four starts for I Azoomed You Knew and pushed his bankroll to $92,339. Bred by Henry Brown out of the stakes-winning First Down Dash mare Dashing Little Reba, the gelding finished a troubled fifth in his debut against maiden company in January at Sunland. He found the winner’s circle in his next out against maidens and then won his West Texas trial with the fifth-fastest qualifying time.

Ms Fast First Prize, a DMNV Mountable filly running for owners Melvin Neugebauer, Jill Giles and Erza Elton Lee, finished a game second with the Foose gelding Go And Get in third for owner Alberto Villanueva.
