The two favorites in Sunday’s $110,000 New Mexico HBA Stakes (RG2) for 3-year-old state-breds battled all the way to the wire at Sunland Park, and Fury Of The Storm, the 2-1 second choice, prevailed by a neck over 4-5 favorite First Blazin Love. With Esgar Ramirez in the saddle, the Furyofthewind colt closed strongly to hit the wire in :19.124 for 400 yards.
Owned by Roberto and Alex Sanchez’s SM Cattle Export Company and Jaime Dominguez, with Roberto Sanchez also serving as the trainer, Fury Of The Storm boosted his bankroll to $147,231 with his first career stakes win. The bay runner, who was bred in New Mexico by Bill and Sandy Miller, also finished second in this year’s Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland.
Fury Of The Storm is one of two starters out of the winning Sail On Bunny mare Bubbles Bunny, and he became the third stakes winner sired by Furyofthewind, a Grade 3-winning Corona Cartel stallion.
First Blazin Love, who defeated Fury Of The Storm in the Shue Fly, ran second for owners Johnny Martinez, Lisa Saumell and Dwayne Johnson. Robert Rivera’s My Big Chief got up for third at odds of 20-1.
