January 6, 2013

Owner/trainer Ricardo Martinez sent out California-bred Freaking to win the $22,750 Signature Stakes on Sunday at Hialeah Park to give the newly-turned 7-year-old gelding a second consecutive win in the event. Freaking captured the same race on the day after Christmas in 2011 during the last meet at Hialeah.

In this edition of the Signature Stakes, Freaking battled for the lead throughout the 350-yard contest and prevailed by a nose with a :17.833 clocking under Freddie Martinez. Sent off as the 5-2 favorite, Freaking picked up $13,650 for the win and now has a record of 24-5-5-1 with earnings of $75,677. Freaking, who was bred by Edward C. Allred, broke his maiden at Los Alamitos in 2009 and then shifted to Hoosier Park before earning his first career stakes win in the last edition of the Signature Stakes at Hialeah. He also won the City of Hialeah Stakes last January.

Juan Cano’s Mr Comando, a Feature Mr Jess gelding who last finished third in the Two Rivers Stakes (G3) at Prairie Meadows in October, finished second. Guillermo Valdivia’s Mr Sippin Corona, by Corona Cartel, took third.
