Stel Corona filly earns first stakes victory at Los Alamitos.
November 11, 2012
Aron Saenz’s Fool The Guys outfinished Wild West Futurity (R) winner Checkspeed by a nose to win the $15,000 Mount Rushmore Handicap (R) for 2-year-olds on Saturday at Los Alamitos. The Mount Rushmore is the final event of a series of restricted events held at the Orange County oval for horses from the Intermountain and Northwest division. The popular series will return in 2013 and horses competing in Canada will be eligible to compete in these races.
Trained by Cody Joiner, Fool The Guys figured to be a major player in the Mount Rushmore after winning his last two starts, including an allowance race at Los Alamitos by a half-length on October 20. The filly by Stel Corona was third at the start behind Checkspeed, but she never lost sight of the leader and came flying in the final strides to pick up her third career victory in six starts. Eduardo Nicasio piloted the Ed Allred-bred filly from post six. She covered the 350 yards in :17.82.
Previously trained by Jorge and Diana Garfias, Fool The Guys ran second in the South Valley/Swett Ranch Futurity earlier this year. Fool The Guys earned $8,250 for the win.
J.P. Sample and Emily Lawrence’s Checkspeed had three good outings during the series. The Check Him Out gelding was second in this race and also in The Plan Handicap (R) in addition to winning the $114,000 Wild West Futurity. The races were part of this series for Intermountain and Northwest runners. BF Memory Lane, RM Looking For Fame, Lazy First Morn, Larryville, Agent Of Move, Makn A Legacy and Signature Rocket completed the field.
