After finishing second in both of his two prior starts, Ocean Runaway apparently decided the $132,860 Mile High Futurity (G3) would be a good spot to break his maiden. The Texas-bred colt by Ocean Runaway recorded a mild upset at 5-1 as he prevailed by a nose in the richest race of the meet on closing day on Sunday at Arapahoe Park near Denver.

Owned by Sandra and Erasmo Muniz and trained by Hipolito Michel-Valverde, Fabulous Ocean finished second in his career debut against maiden company at Arapahoe and then finished second again in his Mile High trial with the fifth-fastest qualifying time. In the final, Fabulous Ocean and jockey Russell Vicchrilli dueled throughout the 400-yard contest and hit the wire a head in front in a time of :19.912. The victory was worth $53,144 to add to Fabulous Ocean’s previous bankroll of $2,460. Burnett Ranches LLC bred Fabulous Ocean in Texas.

Miguel Martinez’s Takin On The Fire, a North Dakota-bred colt by Walk Thru Fire, finished a clear second with Tyme For A Corona in third for owners Maxine Patterson, Jamie Roberts and Judith Lewis.
