Doyles Dashing Star Returns at Hialeah
Hard-knocking stakes winner returns in the Crystal River.
December 12, 2013
Rachel Stephens’ Doyles Dashing Star, winner of the opening-day Orange Blossom Stakes at Hialeah Park on November 29, will shoot for her second straight stakes victory of the young 2013-14 Quarter Horse season on Sunday, December 15.
The accomplished 7-year-old mare, a Hialeah Park “horse for the course,” will also chase after her sixth victory in South Florida, her third consecutive win overall, and her 13th lifetime score when she meets nine rivals in the fifth running of the $30,000 Crystal River Stakes at 550 yards.
Trainer Gene Stephens will give a leg up to jockey Omar Reyes, who confidently handled the Georgia-bred daughter of Heza Fast Dash by Georgia Wildcat in her solid Orange Blossom triumph, a race contested at the same distance as the Crystal River.
As Reyes commented after the Orange Blossom, “She broke well and she ran well all the way to the finish line. The break was the key to her winning.”
Stephens reported that Doyles Dashing Star came out of the victory in perfect condition and that she was ready to run again. “She loves it down at Hialeah Park, she always runs well on that track, and she always gives us her best,” he said.
“I’ve had her since she was a baby,” Stephens added. “I sent her to another trainer for her first four races, but I’ve had her for all of her outs (39) since then. She’s been good to me. She’s one of the best horses I’ve ever trained.”
Doyles Dashing Star will face five of the runners she defeated in the Orange Blossom: Lethal Volt (placed 2nd after a disqualification), Jets Quick Fortune (placed 4th), Sheila Tequila (placed 5th), The Granite Jewel (placed 7th), and Joltin Jess (finished 2nd, disqualified and placed 9th).
Her other four foes in the Crystal River include Bucket List and defending champion Call Me Sundown, who prepped by finishing 1-2 in an allowance-level race at 550 yards on a sloppy Hialeah Park track on November 30.
The 2013 Crystal River Stakes is the second race in the new Hialeah Marathon series, which also includes the Orange Blossom, the Moonstone Stakes (660 yards) on January 5, 2014, the Key West Stakes (1000 yards) on January 26, and the Sailfish Stakes (1000 yards) on closing day February 23.
