Miguel Sanguino’s Chicks Special Angel (Chickspecialmongoose-CFF Plain Jane by Super Bowl Dash) returned to the Northwest and immediately made a statement when she posted the fastest time from two trials to the $15,000 Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge at 400 yards on Sunday at the Washington track.
The winner of this race receives an invitation to the $100,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows on October 18.
Chicks Special Angel was sent off as the even-money choice in her trial after finishing third in the $25,000 Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos in her previous start. She came through for trainer Juan Sanguino in her trial when she won with the top time of :19.670 while the second- and third-place finishers, Ms Eaves (Tres Seis-Little Miss Tuff Stuff by Chicks Beduino) and Flyin Lion (Panther Mountain-Flaming Cynthia by Rocket’s Magic) posted the second- and third-fastest times.
Gerardo Prado’s Ms Eaves was third in the $25,000 Merial Distaff Sandy Downs Challenge last summer.
Mike and Sherry Reardon’s homebred Flyin Lion won four-straight races, including the $16,000 Portland Meadows Derby, before her third-place run in her Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge trial.
In the first of two trials, Eduardo Montes’ Shake Wide Open (Royal Shake Em-Runaway Eye Opener by Mr Eye Opener) also returned to the Northwest after a couple of starts last fall at Los Alamitos. Her best effort was a third-place finish in the $16,000 Kip Didericksen Handicap.
The Danny Montes-trained Shake Wide Open pulled out to a half length win in her Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge trial with the fourth-fastest time of :19.910.
