With his third victory in as many starts this year, Quarter Circle W Bar LLC’s Bet On Ballou scored a 7-1 upset in Sunday’s $85,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park. Making his stakes debut as an 8-year-old, the New Mexico-bred gelding by Sum Fun To Bet got up to prevail by a neck in a time of :17.065 for 350 yards. Jaime Leos rode for trainer Wesley Giles.

Bet On Ballou, who was bred by Carl Dahl out of the Strait To The Bank mare Ballou Thirty Two, scored two other wins earlier in the Sunland meet running for claiming tags of $25,000 and $40,000 in optional claiming events. His career record now stands at 22-10-2-4 with earnings of $189,705.

Stel Gone Corona, winner of last year’s New Mexico Breeders Championship Stakes (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque, finished a game second for owner Veronica Ramirez. Chin Lee’s Sandys Jesse, who won the New Mexico HBA Stakes (RG2) in her last start, crossed the wire third. Here Kittykittykitty, the defending race champion and tepid 5-1 betting favorite, finished fourth.

The final odds showed an amazingly well-matched field, as all 10 horses had odds of between 5-1 and 9-1.
