Only three months after winning a claiming race at the $12,500 level, Aful Alibi scored a one-length victory in her stakes debut in the $65,000 Tommy “Duke” Smith Stakes (RG2) on Saturday at SunRay Park. The 400-yard event was for 3-year-old fillies bred in New Mexico.

Ridden by Macario Rodriguez for breeder, owner and trainer Gabino Carrillo, Aful Alibi returned $14.20 as the third wagering choice and crossed the wire in :19.535. The Genuine Strawfly filly, who was bred by Leonard Blach, improved her record to 10-3-2-3 with earnings of $67,286. Aful Alibi finished off the board in two of her first three career starts but is now on a streak of seven consecutive top three finishers. After winning against $12,500 claiming company at Sunland Park in March, the filly stepped up and finished third and second against allowance foes before moving up to stakes company.

Kristopher Cordova’s homebred SLR Jessies Girl, a daughter of Jesse James Jr also making her stakes debut, took second. The Dash Ta Fame filly Afame came on to take third. Odds-on favorite Sandys Jesse faded to fifth.
