Strategic Weapon Tops Ruidoso Day 2

First Down Dash gelding tops second day of Ruidoso training races.

Johnny Trotter’s homebred Strategic Weapon, a First Down Dash gelding who is a half-brother to One Famous Eagle, led the times from 13 schooling races at Ruidoso Downs on Tuesday when the times quickened on the second day of schooling races.

Both Strategic Weapon and One Famous Eagle (by Mr Jess Perry) are out of the Chicks Beduino mare One Famous Lady. Leading sire One Famous Eagle, the 2008 champion 3-year-old colt, earned $1,387,453 with wins in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Super and Golden State derbies.

The four-fastest times from the first two days of the three days of schooling races were recorded on Tuesday. The final day of schooling races is Wednesday.

The Blane Wood-trained Strategic Weapon raced to a :15.492 time for 300 yards in the fifth race and the second-place finisher, Crowson Racing’s One Quick Eagle, posted the day’s second-fastest time of :15.500. One Quick Eagle is sired by One Famous Eagle out of multiple Grade 1 winner Quick Moon Sign.

Also surpassing the :15.680 time recorded by Sizzlin Mr Perry to lead the prospects on Monday were Trotter’s Dynastys First Call (FDD Dynasty-Mightys First Call by Calligrapher, :15.535) and Los Japos Brothers’ Kold Play (Gonna Ro Sham Bo-Famous Poet by Dash Ta Fame, :15.626).

Many of the competitors racing in the Ruidoso Downs’s schooling races will return in the trials to the Grade 1, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity on May 24, opening day of the of Ruidoso Downs’ summer season. Also on tap for the leading 2-year-old Quarter Horses this summer are the $1 million Rainbow Futurity (G1) and the $2.6 million All American Futurity (G1).

The only Quarter Horse race with a larger purse is the $2.8 million-est. All American Derby (G1). The All American Derby will set an all-time record for a Quarter Horse purse when it is held on September 1. The All American Futurity is held on the following day, Labor Day.
