Abigail Kawananakoa’s Spirit Leader posted a length victory in the second race Friday night at Los Alamitos Race Course while covering the 300 yards in :15.546.

The Corona Cartel colt out of Sandras Task, was the third high selling yearling at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale last September. He comes from the stock of breeder Julianna Hawn Holt and brought a final bid of $425,000.

Trained by Paul Jones and ridden by Ramon Sanchez, Spirit Leader was second after getting bumped at the start, but looked tremendous in the second half of the race increasing his lead from a half-length to a length.

Spirit Leader is a half brother to 2005 champion 2-year-old gelding Leading Spirit, who won 10 of 19 starts while earning $811,413. Leading Spirit won the West Texas Futurity at Sunland Park, Ruidoso Futurity and Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs and First Down Dash Handicap and Bank of America California Championship at Los Alamitos. Spirit Leader is also a half brother to multiple stakes winner Leading Diva.

Jaime Gomez’s Braveheart Dasher finished second in this race with Burger, Smith, Dees and Moonshine Racing’s Honey Badger finished third.
