Once again, the annual AQHA convention has come and gone.

Meetings related to racing were held throughout the weekend with graded stakes on Friday, the AQHA Racing Committee on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning and the AQHA Racing Council following the committee meeting Sunday afternoon.

The Equine Health, Welfare, Integrity and Research (EqHWIR, as I like to call ’em) subcommittee even snuck in a breakfast meeting Saturday morning.

Items that dominated the discussions were medication, the champions selection process and two new subcommittees that I feel will really benefit the racing industry – international and marketing.

Racing Committee and Council Chairman Matt Witman recently appointed these two new groups, with the AQHA International Subcommittee being chaired by Vince Genco and the AQHA Marketing Subcommittee chaired by Tom Lepic. Both groups will begin addressing areas of American Quarter Horse racing that are very important to the growth of our industry.

You will hear more about these and other issues that were discussed during meetings in the coming weeks as staff and committee members begin working on details and items are approved by the AQHA Executive Committee during its April meeting.

A couple items I do want to make you aware of:

*Under the “Horsemens’ Info” section at www.aqharacing.com is a new link – “Racing Welfare and Medication”. This area will have content from AQHA and other industry groups related to the safety and welfare of racehorses. It will be constantly updated and be a resource for the industry whenever someone needs news and information.

*If you are interested in getting involved on the Racing Committee level, applications are due on Friday, March 16. For more information, contact racing@aqha.org.

In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments at (806) 376-4811 or email at tbuck@aqha.org.
