Fort Erie Race Track in Fort Erie, Ontario, will hold its 2012 racing schedule as planned, despite the recent announcement by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission that it will close the slot operation at Fort Erie at the end of business on Monday, April 30th.

“The government has guaranteed its funding for the operation of the race track and the slot revenue which assists in funding the purses has been committed for this racing season which, if business remains the same as last year, our purse account will not be impacted,” the track said in a release.

The track is set to host five full days of Quarter Horse racing, October 3-17, as well as three additional days of mixed races on July 2, August 6 and September 3.

“I have confirmed that Fort Erie will hold its 2012 race meet as planned, and that the Regional Challenge Championship and Distaff races will be run as scheduled,” said AQHA Director of Racing Challenge Darrell Hare. “The Ajax meet will not be affected in 2012.”

Ajax Downs, in Ajax, Ontario, is set to race 40 days from May 13 through September 30.

Ajax Downs will host its first Challenge races, including the Adequan Ajax Derby Challenge and the John Deere Ajax Juvenile Challenge on August 28.
