Delta Downs will begin its 2013 Quarter Horse season on Friday, April 26, at 6:45 p.m. CST.

The first program of the season will include the $50,000 Vinton Stakes (RG3) for Louisiana-breds and the $20,000 Delta Dash Stakes as well as two trials for this year’s $25,000-added Old South Derby. Opening weekend will wrap up on Saturday as the track hosts the $50,000 John Alleman Memorial Stakes (RG3) and six qualifying trials for this year’s $25,000-added Old South Futurity. Overall Delta Downs will offer 28 stakes races and over $1.5 million in guaranteed or added stakes purses this year.

After opening weekend, Delta Downs will settle into a Wednesday through Saturday format of live racing with first post time each night taking place at 6:45 p.m. The season will include 46 race days in all and runs through July 13.

Some familiar names will return to Delta Downs this year including John Hamilton, who won his first riding title at the track in 2012 with 65 wins; Kenneth L. Roberts, Sr., who captured his fourth leading trainer title last year by saddling 35 winners; and Ana Lilia Alvidrez, who notched her second leading owner title last year with nine victories.

In addition to great live racing during the upcoming season, Delta Downs will also simulcast this year’s Triple Crown races. Fans can watch and wager on the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4, the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 18, and the Belmont Stakes from Belmont Park on Saturday, June 8. There will be a special post time of 6:15 p.m. for live racing on the Triple Crown simulcast days.

This year’s Kentucky Derby could be very special for local fans as it is likely that three horses which took part in last year’s $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) in November will be in the starting gate next Saturday. Goldencents, who won the Jackpot, Mylute, who ran third, and Itsmyluckyday, who was sixth, are each preparing to run in the first leg of the Triple Crown.
