2011 Youth World

The first remains first.

Nobody wants to be first draw in a finals, especially at big show like the Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show.

But someone has to be, and in the reining finalsAugust 9, that person was Danielle Cohen of Terrell, Texas, riding Whata Chic Magnet.

“I was nervous about going first,” Danielle said in her exclusive Journal  interview. “I didn’t want to go first. I wanted to see the scores and see how they were judging, but I went in and ran as hard as I could. He was better than I thought he was going to be.”

That first run scored a 216, a score held through the first 10 and then through the second 10. In fact, that first run score of 216 was good enough for Danielle’s first Ford Youth World championship.

Whata Chic Magnet, aka “Magnum,” is a 2004 buckskin gelding by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Im Not Blonde by Catalyst Too.

“He’s just always been perfect from the day I bought him, just always there for me, and I never have to do as much as he does,” Danielle said.

Magnum has more than $26,000 in National Reining Horse Association earnings, and what he does best is stop, Danielle said.

Danielle purchased the 7-year-old gelding at the 2009 National Reining Breeders Classic. In addition to loving reining, the 14-year-old enjoys riding jumpers.

“But mostly the reining,” she said.

Besides the world championship trophy, Danielle – at her first Ford Youth World – won the Intermediate champion trophy.

“I didn’t know they even had an Intermediate trophy until they called it out,” she said. She plans to take her loot home to Terrell to celebrate with her friends before starting to plan a return trip to defend her title.

“Maybe with a different horse,” she said. “Let him go to another youth kid, and let them try and win it.”

Danielle Cohen of Terrell, Texas, and her American Quarter Horse Whata Chic Magnet won the 2011 youth world championship in reining.
