Only A Breeze and Susan Roberts
On August 28, the Roberts women proved that they’re a force to be contended with. Susan Roberts was overcome with emotion at the announcement of her world championship in western pleasure at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show.
This is Susan’s first world championship, an accomplishment that she has dreamt about since she was a girl.
“It’s something that I can’t even imagine. I’ve dreamed of this as a little girl and thought, ‘That would be the best thing ever,’ and here I am at 53 and I’m very excited.”
She placed fourth at last year’s Adequan Select World, but worked with her trainer, Katie Green, and came back this season with a vengeance.
“Last year, my trot in was bad. So I really worked on trotting to make sure that we didn’t weave. We weaved last year. I really, really wanted to do well this year.”
She has been showing western pleasure horses since she was a young girl, but took a break when she had her daughter, Hillary Roberts.
“I started back in 1992, eons ago, with Lauren Barnes as my trainer. I showed until I had Hillary in ’95 and then I took a 17-year hiatus,” said Susan.
She started her daughter with showing early on before realizing that if she is hauling and brushing horses at shows anyway, she may as well get herself involved.
“I let (Hillary) show and get established. Then I thought, ‘I’m at every show, I might as well show, too.’ We bought Only Ever After for me about three or four years ago.”
Susan showed last year on her mare, Only Ever After, but decided to bring Only A Breeze, aka ‘Abby,’ to this year’s Adequan Select World.
“It’s just one of those things that felt good at the time. She had an awesome go at the Tom Powers with Hillary and I won the 50-&-over there, and I thought, ‘I’m going to go ahead and continue on her,' ” said Susan.
Susan and Hillary have had great success at the AQHA world shows so far this year. Hillary won the western pleasure at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show.
Hillary didn’t make it to Amarillo to cheer her mother on because she just started school at Texas Christian University, but she is just as excited for Susan’s win.
“She’s back at the dorm crying,” said Susan.
With all this success, Susan has decided to start a breeding program, Capital Quarter Horses LLC, featuring their mares.
Only A Breeze who is by Invitation Only and out of Zippin The Breeze is just one of three mares that will be a part of this program.
Susan says of her mare Abby, “She’s an amazing horse. I have her full sister and I show both of them. She did awesome in the 3’s and 4’s, and here we are.”

Her full sister, Only Ever After, will be shown in November at what Susan fondly refers to as ‘the big world show.’
“We’ll be at Congress and then after that, we’ll be at World,” said Susan.
