Colonels Smoking Gun Hits $6 Million Marker

Offspring of the late stallion known as "Gunner" earn $6 million in reining competition.

With the month of April being a busy time in National Reining Horse Association competition, the legend of NRHA Hall of Fame stallion Colonels Smoking Gun had more pages added to the story. Thanks to the success of his offspring, “Gunner” has become NRHA’s fifth $6 million sire with official offspring earnings of $6,013,250.
 
Bred by Eric Storey of Henagar, Alabama, Gunner is the top NRHA earning offspring of Colonelfourfreckle and out of Katie Gun, the John Gun daughter whose offspring have earned more than $554,000 in NRHA competition. Gunner earned nearly $175,000 in his career including these accolades:

•    1996 NRHA Futurity Level 4 open reserve champion ridden by Clint Haverty
•    1997 NRHA Derby Level 4 non-pro finalist ridden by Kim Sloan
•    1998 National Reining Breeders Classic Level 4 open reserve champion ridden by Clint Haverty
•    1998 NRHA Derby Level 4 open finalist ridden by Clint Haverty
•    2001 United States Equestrian Team Festival of Champions national reining champion ridden by Bryant Pace

In 2002, Gunner was immortalized as a Breyer Horse for the USET Special Edition model.
 
Gunner was euthanized in 2013 of laminitis and was owned by Tim and Colleen McQuay of McQuay Stables Inc. in Tioga, Texas. However, Gunner’s story continues in the reining arena through the talents of his progeny. His top earners to date include:
