Happy anniversary, Ann Baker.

The longtime AQHA competitor celebrated her first anniversary in style March 24 at the 2013 Region Nine Championship in West Monroe, Louisiana, winning the amateur all-around TexTan saddle presented by Markel Insurance.

“I have won a couple of saddles before, but I think this is more important,” Ann said. “I haven’t done it in a long time, and for it to be on my first anniversary it means a lot. And it’s my parents’ 61st anniversary also, so this has been a good day.”

Ann’s partner in her good day was Im On Rolex Time, a 2004 sorrel gelding by Zippos Gold Rolex and out of Snuggles N Hugs by Zippos Old Gold. He was bred by Richard and Charlen McBride of Burleson, Texas, and Ann bought him as a long yearling.

“I’ve done all the training on him,” said the Texarkana, Texas, resident. “I’ve had help here and there from great friends and great trainers. I’ve been blessed with him.”

It was just a year ago that Ann got married and her new husband, Glenn Jones, got an inkling of what he was in for right after the ceremony.

“On our honeymoon, instead, we turned around the following weekend and went to a horse show,” Glenn said. “And this past Valentine’s Day, we went to a horse show. This year, she said, ‘You’re sure for our anniversary, you want to go to a horse show?’ I said, ‘Yeah, that’s great.’ There’s no place I’d rather be than with her doing this.”

The Region Nine Championship was March 23-24. Mark Harrell Horse Shows ran the show in conjunction with the Louisiana Quarter Horse Association Spring Show. Ann hopes that during the show, she earned enough points to come just a little closer to her summer goal: a Superior for Im On Rolex Time.

“I haven’t shown this many classes in quite a while,” Ann said. “I usually do trail and western riding, and so this was just go-for-it-all. He really came through for me and I’m proud of him.”

While Ann concentrates on practice and training, Glenn has been forging a different relationship with “Troy” – named for former Dallas Cowboys football player Troy Aikman. When Ann and Troy quit practicing, the cute sorrel makes his way to Glenn for ear rubs.

“He’s a great horse,” Glenn said. “(Ann and I) got involved about two years ago. We’ve known each other for a while because we work together at a lab in a medical facility. I told her I had no idea that a 1,500 pound animal would become one of my best friends.”
