The Huntfield AQHA Derby series is off and running for 2013! The first 3-foot open and non-pro derby was January 12 during the Fox Lea Farm Circuit in Venice, Florida.
AQHA Professional Horseman Bill Ellis rode Naturally Broke to the open win for owner Abbie Anne Skelton of Stanford, Montana. The 2002 gelding is by Natural Iron and out of Go For Broke (TB) by Exclusive Enough, bred by AQHA Professional Horseman William Bormes of Castle Rock, Colorado.
The Derby series debuted in 2012 with a much-anticipated finals in November at the AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. Series founders AQHA Professional Horsemen Lainie DeBoer of Forest Lake, Minnesota, and David Warner of Frankfort, Kentucky, look to see each event grow in 2013.
“(This first event) was awesome,” Lainie told The American Quarter Horse Journal. “Last year, we had 11 or 12 in it; this year we had 19, and half were non-pros.”
A crowd-pleaser, each derby features two rounds – a classic hunter round and a challenging “handy” round. Riders can earn bonus points by adding difficulty to their course strategy and choosing higher jump options.
The series features a 3-foot open and non-pro derby and will add a 2-foot 6-inch Novice and Select derby to some events in 2013.
In another change this year, the non-pro finals will be in June in Lexington, Kentucky, during the Huntfield Summer Series at Rolex Stadium; the open finals are scheduled again to be at the AQHA World Show in Oklahoma City in November.
