Living up to his name, Geral Dewitt’s Wakeup N Dash snapped a six-race losing streak with a surprise victory in Saturday’s $35,000 Magnolia Stakes (R) for state-breds at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs. The 5-year-old gelding by Heza Fast Dash broke from the far outside in the field of seven going 870 yards but rallied along the rail under jockey Jerry Yoakum to win by three-parts of a length in :46.832. Wakeup N Dash paid $41 for a $2 win ticket as the longest shot in the field.
This marked the first stakes victory for Wakeup N Dash as well as his stakes debut in his 23rd career start. The Anthony Arey trainee, who was bred by Philip Deville, now has a record of 23-5-4-5 with earnings of $72,594.
David Lee Vance’s Keepn It Kool, a First To Shine gelding who had hit the board in three previous stakes, rallied to take second. Jacob Broussard’s Game Patriot gelding Jessapatriot finished third with favored Rocky Mountain Fly in fourth.
Also on the card, Alejandro Sanchez’s Chicks Patriot prevailed in the $38,800 Louisiana Downs Maiden Stakes. Martin Rubalcava piloted the Game Patriot gelding for trainer Carlos Saldivar and got the 350-yard distance in :17.676. This marked the third consecutive win for Chicks Patriot, who hit the board just once in his first six starts before breaking his maiden at the $5,000 claiming level at Evangeline Downs in December. He then won his Maiden Stakes trial with the third-fastest qualifying time, and his latest victory improved his bankroll to $30,390.
