'Valentino', 'Larry' Meet in Tricky Dust

Valentino De Lao and All About Larry meet up at Ruidoso.

June 21, 2012

Tony Carnes’ Valentino De Lao and Diane Heath’s All About Larry, two of the sharpest horses in the New Mexico 870-yard division, meet in the $20,000 Tricky Dust Stakes on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs

Valentino De Lao (Apollo (TB)-JJs First Feature by JJ Shot Glass) comes into the Tricky Dust with four wins and three second-place finishes in his latest seven starts. The 4-year-old gelding has won or placed in stakes races in his last three starts. After second-place runs in the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge (G3) and the SunRay Park Marathon, he stepped up with a commanding 3 1/4-length win in the $30,000 Fine Loom Handicap.

All About Larry (Heza Motor Scooter-Come Hell Or Hiwater by Shoot Yeah) was fifth in the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge and then scored in the SunRay Park Marathon as the 2-1 favorite. The John Stinebaugh-trained gelding was on the lead throughout the race and pulled out for the nearly 4-length win.

Jose Orquiz’s Im Royal Quick (Royal Quick Dash-Im Brendas Baby by Merridoc) is quick from the gate and drew the inside post position in the seven-horse field. The Alonso Hernandez-trained gelding comes off his best performance from his three starts this year when he went gate-to-wire to win an optional-claiming race at Sunland Park.
