Ultimate Wave Cruises in Arapahoe Derby

Favorite rolls to easy win and earns a berth at Prairie Meadows.

June 9, 2012

Winning like the fastest qualifier and 4-5 favorite should, Ultimate Wave crushed the field in Saturday’s $42,100 Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge at Arapahoe Park. The gray colt by Wave Carver jumped out to an early lead and hit the wire 2 ¼ lengths in front with a 400-yard clocking of :19.660 at the Colorado track. Russell Vicchrilli rode for trainer Chris Gandarilla and owner Junior’s Quarter Horses Inc. of Denver.

Bred in Texas by Keilani Farms, Ultimate Wave broke his maiden in the trials in just his third career start. He clocked 400 yards in :20.146 to win his heat and improved on that time significantly in the final. In addition to the winner’s check for $20,218, Ultimate Wave also earned a berth in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) to be run October 27 at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

Ultimate Wave became the sixth stakes winner for world champion Wave Carver and the first stakes winner produced by millionaire Eye For Corona. The 7-year-old daughter of Corona Cartel, who won the 2007 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) and finished second in both the Ed Burke Million and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurities (G1), has also produced stakes-placed Eye For FDD, by First Down Dash.

Another son of Wave Carver, Hugo Barron Sierra’s homebred gelding Wave Good Bye Baby, finished a clear second and pushed his bankroll past $60,000 with the effort.

Patrick Sanchez’s Oak Tree Charlie, a gelding by Oak Tree Special, rallied to finish third.
