Trotter Runners Lead Maiden Stakes Trials

Dozens of runners to run in Maiden Stakes trials at Los Alamitos.

Press Release
January 31, 2014

Johnny Trotter, whose partnership with Burnett Ranches LLC was honored as the AQHA champion owners, and trainer Trey Wood, the nation’s fifth leading trainer in money earned last year, will send out talented sprinters Strategic Weapon, Swingin Eagle and Messenger Eagle in the trials to the $112,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Horses are eligible to enter the trials if they were still maidens as of December 1, 2013. There will be no racing at Los Alamitos on Super Bowl Sunday, but racing will resume on Friday, February 7. Forty-two sophomores sprinters have entered Saturday’s trials at 350 yards with the horses with the 10 fastest times returning for the final on Sunday, February 23. The race is not an official stakes.

With Trotter’s talented trio of homebreds, Wood’s barn will be strongly represented in three of the five Maiden trials. AQHA champion jockey Cody Jensen will ride each of the three runners from this stable. Strategic Weapon figures to be one of the standouts of the night for the Trotter/Wood connection. Strategic Weapon broke his maiden on January 5 following solid in the money finishes in the trials to the Golden State Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Strategic Weapon also participated in the Ruidoso Futurity and was second in his trial to that big-money race. The First Down Dash gelding has hit the board in five of eight career starts and is the richest horse in this field with $31,900. His stablemate is Messenger Eagle, who earned his diploma after beating maiden claimers on January 4. The gelding by One Famous Eagle will be in action in the fourth trial.

Another Trotter/Wood sprinter is the recent winner Swingin Eagle, who will be in action in the final heat. Also sired by champion One Famous Eagle, Swingin Eagle broke his maiden here on January 3 and like Strategic Weapon he has hit the board in several trials to Grade 1 futurities. Swingin Eagle was second in a trial to the Los Alamitos Two Million when facing eventual winner Foose Cash SR and also ran third in a Golden State Million trial, third in a Rainbow trial, and fourth in an All American trial.

Y/N Horse Stables LLC’s Jess Feelin Blue will face Swingin Eagle while making his Los Alamitos debut in the final trial. The son of Jess Louisiana Blue is the richest horse in this race after running second in the Desert Classic Futurity and running in the Four Corners Futurity. Foose Down Dash, who ran third to Strategic Weapon in that January maiden race, and the gritty The Track will also compete in this trial.

Ben McKinney’s Larry Hill, who has three runner-up efforts to his name, will headline the first Maiden trial against the likes of Double Bar S Ranch’s Whos Got The Look and Brian Guley and Paul Jones’ Brighterthanthesun, who has finished second against maiden in each of her last two races. Strategic Weapons’ top rivals in the second trial figure to include Here O Beduino, The Ocean King, and Purdy Kool, a trio of runners that broke their respective maidens last December. A lightly raced colt by No Secrets Here, Here O Beduino earned his first victory following an impressive daylight win on December 13. Lazy Creek Ranch’s Navea is another one to watch following her second place finish despite a trouble trip on December 20.

Mauro Eli Zaborowsky’s Katrina SA has finished in the top four in all six of her career starts. The filly will now enter the third Maiden trial after earning her first ever win on January 3. This trial appears to have the strongest field of the night as five other runners have previously visited the winner’s circle. They are Just A Kiss, Pretty Lethal, Fire On Fire, The Party Is Hot and Little Foose Coupe.

Cosme Cisnero’s Reigning Runner will be in action in the fourth trial and will face the aforementioned Messenger Eagle. The colt by TR Dasher was a half-length winner here on December 15 and before that he was second in an $8,000 stakes race at the Big Fresno Fair.
