Track Record in CBY Derby
Huckleberry Mojito sets new 400-yard mark at Minnesota track.
July 7, 2012
Fastest qualifier and 1-2 favorite Huckleberry Mojito certainly lived up to her billing in the $40,650 Canterbury Park Derby on Saturday as the daughter of Feature Mr Jess rolled to an easy 1 ½-length win in :19.625 to set a 400-yard track record at the Minnesota track. Nik Goodwin piloted the Texas-bred for trainer Ed Ross Hardy owner LMR 2011 of Austin, Texas.
Huckleberry Mojito, who was bred by Gary and Patty Petersen out of the Grade 3-winning Mr Eye Opener mare Eye Opening Special, posted a dominant 3 ¼-length win in the trials in a time of :19.971. Then she improved on that in the final to erase the mark of :19.692 set by Mr Hempens Feature in 2010. This marked the third career win in 10 starts for Huckleberry Mojito and improved her earnings to $46,645. The filly broke her maiden as a 2-year-old at Remington Park and later qualified to the Valley Junction Futurity (G3) at Prairie Meadows.
Tom Maher’s Painted Lies, a gelding by PYC Paint Your Wagon who won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders/NCQHRA Derby (R) earlier in the Canterbury meet, had his four-race win streak snapped with a second-place finish. Another PYC Paint Your Wagon runner, the filly Paint Or More running for Lunderborg LLC, got up for third.
