August 23, 2013
A pair of qualifiers to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) – runner-up The August Heat and seventh-place finisher Far Niente – begin their fall derby runs at Los Alamitos when they start as the top-two qualifiers in the $232,900 Golden State Derby (G1) at Los Alamitos on Sunday night.
Bobby Cox’s homebred The August Heat (Corona Cartel-Jess Genuine by Mr Jess Perry) was beaten by just a nose in the Two Million after winning his trial by 1 1/2 lengths.
The August Heat finished fourth in the Dash For Cash Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park (and was moved to third after a disqualification) before heading to Los Alamitos for the Two Million.
The Jaime Gomez-trained The August Heat returned from a more than six-month layoff to win his Golden State Derby trial by three quarters of a length, with the second-fastest qualifying time of :19.510.
Tom Atwood and Vessels Stallion Farms’ Far Niente (FDD Dynasty-Shahayla by Chicks Beduino) returned from the same length of time off to top the qualifiers with a :19.492 time for trainer Jose Hernandez Jr. He won by a neck over third-fastest qualifier Jess Being Valiant (Valiant Hero-Jess Sass Me by Mr Jess Perry).
Far Niente was third in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity (G2) and has five wins from nine career starts.
Howard Nichols’ Jess Being Valiant won the Golden State Juvenile (R) last fall and raced to a troubled sixth-place finish in the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1).
