Sweet Oblivion Set For Merial Sam Houston
Sweet Oblivion seeks stakes win at Sam Houston.
April 25, 2013
The Joe Kirk Fulton-owned and -bred Sweet Oblivion is in good form to score her first stakes win in the $22,000 Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge on Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park.
Sweet Oblivion (Mr Jess Perry-Daring Difference by Victory Dash) returned from a nearly six-month layoff on April 6 to run a close second in the Silestone Stakes over the Sam Houston track. The Mike Robbins-trained mare was second in the Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge as the 4-5 favorite last summer and raced to a fourth-place finish in the Dash For Cash Derby (G2) back in the fall.
Jose Salavar’s Bertha Venation (Corona Caliente-Dash To Glory by Texigo Star) was second in last year’s running of the Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge and is making her third start off a two-month freshening. She won an allowance race and then lost her rider at the start of the Streakin La Jolla Stakes, each at Louisiana Downs.
J.T. Hooten and Jesse Yoakum’s Sarah Must (Jet Cartel-Go You Must by Meter Me Gone) concluded her 2012 campaign with a surprising second-place finish behind The Long Knife in the Texas Class Derby (G1). In her only start this year, she was a lackluster seventh in the Silestone Stakes as the 22-11 favorite.
Supporting the Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge on the program is the $18,000 Zoetis Sam Houston Starter Allowance Stakes for horse who have raced for a $5,000 claiming tag or less in the past year.
Robert Guzman’s DW Runaway B (Ocean Runaway-Jump Jive An Wail by Holland Ease) is the fastest qualifier, with a :17.935 time for 350 yards. He scored his previous win when he took a $10,000 claiming race by daylight on January 20.
