Stern Test in Ruidoso Futurity

June 7, 2012

Los Primitos’ Krash Cartel could not have had a better career debut in the Ruidoso Futurity trials and now he has the opportunity join the elite 2-year-old stakes winners in the $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.

Krash Cartel (Corona Cartel-Race Valentine by Strawfly Special) was scintillating in his Ruidoso Futurity trial when he drew off by 4 lengths. His time of :17.759 for the 350 yards was the top time from the record 25 Ruidoso Futurity trials.

PJ Chick In Black (Desirio-Eddie Jym by Corona Cocktail) and Pajarita Sita (Pappasito-Mongoose Jet Eye by Mr Eye Opener) each bring stakes experience into the Ruidoso Futurity.

Fredda Draper and Denny Bowen’s PJ Chick In Black is unbeaten in her three starts, including defeating New Mexico-breds in the New Mexico Spring Futurity (RG2). The Carl Draper-trained filly won the Spring Futurity by a length in :14.912 for 300 yards.

PJ Chick In Black was supplemented to the Ruidoso Futurity for a $15,000 payment fee and lived up to that investment when she stunned her open trial competition by 3 lengths. Her time of :17.848 was the fourth-fastest qualifying mark.

Joe Badilla Sr.’s Pajarita Sita has a third-place finish in the West Texas Futurity (G1) as the sole blemish on her three-race resume. She won her maiden at first asking when she took her West Texas Futurity trial and then was the 5-2 favorite in the West Texas Futurity when she was beaten by 1 length.

As the 4-5 favorite in her Ruidoso Futurity trial, Pajarita Sita lived up to expectations with a 1 ¼-length victory. Her time of :17.913 was the seventh-fastest qualifying mark.

The Michael Valenzuela-owned and -trained Prince Of Alexander (Stel Corona-Princess Of Dash by Dash For Cash) showed the promise of being a premier 2-year-old when he won his Ruidoso Futurity trial by 2 lengths in his first start. The gelding opened an early lead and then moved forward with the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.786.
