Stel Gone Corona Wins NM Championship

Stel Corona gelding wins state-bred stakes on closing day at Albuquerque.

November 4, 2012

Veronica Ramirez’s Stel Gone Corona held on for a narrow victory on Sunday in the $50,000 New Mexico Breeders Championship Stakes (RG3) on closing day at The Downs at Albuquerque. Jose Alvarez rode the 4-year-old Stel Corona gelding for trainer Jaime Dominguez and covered 440 yards in :21.214.

Bred by Double A Ranch, Stel Gone Corona won four of his first five career starts, including last year’s New Mexico HBA Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park, but had only managed one third-place finish in five outs this year. This victory at odds of 9-2 earned him a check for $30,000 and boosted his bankroll $152,827 with a career record of 12-5-0-2.

Verona Vaughn’s homebred Visible Injun, a gelding by Invisible Injun who won last year’s New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (R), put in a strong effort to finish second by a nose. Seacrest Out, an 8-year-old gelding by Genuine Strawfly running for owner Marcellino Ortiz, took third to earn his first stakes-placing in 51 career starts.
