August 2, 2013

Fair Meadows in Tulsa, Oklahoma, brought the curtain down on its 2013 meet on Friday night with a card featuring the $127,889 Speedhorse Futurity (G2). Favored Spit Like Jagger, an Oklahoma-bred colt by Spit Curl Jess, jumped out to an early lead in the 350-yard race and was never headed before hitting the wire 1 ½ lengths in front with a time of :17.573. G.R. Carter Jr. rode for trainer Rodney Reed, who co-owns the winner with Steve Wilson.

Spit Like Jagger, who was bred by Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith, has never been worse than second in six starts with four wins and two runner-up finishes. He has now banked $85,876.

Spit Curl Jess also sired the second-place finisher Spit Curl Ten, a gelding running for owner Jeffery Strange. Steve Holt’s homebred Jess One More Thing, by Fly Jess Fly, took third.

Also on the card, Cuadra Ladrilleros Ltd. Co.’s SS Calendar Girl, a daughter of Finding Nemo, scored an impressive 1 ¼-length victory in the $32,841 Speedhorse Derby (G3). The Oklahoma-bred sprinted 350 yards in :17.445 with Jesus Salazar up for trainer Bonifacio Almanza.

SS Calendar Girl, who won last year’s FL Lady Bug Stakes (R) at Remington Park, has banked $68,418 with six wins from 10 starts. Lloyd Scherwinski and Wm. E. Smith bred her out of the Mr Jess Perry mare First Prize Robin, who won the 2006 Remington Park Futurity (G1).

Maiden TJ Blue Bank finished second for the sixth time in his career for owner Keith Bretz. Although the Oklahoma-bred has yet to find the winner’s circle, the Royal Blue Chew Chew gelding has earned $23,046 in eight starts. Eugene Hill’s Feline Chic, by Country Chicks Man, took third.
