Speedhorse Races 'Spit'ful of Talent

Mata Manuel’s Spit Dash tops the qualifiers to the $127,896 Speedhorse Futurity (RG2) and Cuadra Ladrilleros Ltd. Co.’s SS Calendar Girl holds the top qualifying spot to the $32,842 Speedhorse Derby (RG3) when they are run on Friday night at Fair Meadows.

The Speedhorse races are stallion progeny events.

Spit Dash (Spit Curl Jess-De Elegant Dash by First Down Dash) raced to his second-straight win when he won his trial by a length, with a :17.763 time for the 350 yards. He won his maiden in his previous start when he took a Remington Park maiden race in June.

Steve Wilson and Rodney Reed’s Spit Like Jagger (Spit Curl Jess-Fast Prize Corona by Corona Cartel) could grab favoritism after winning three of his latest four starts with a second in the $75,000 Heritage Place Juvenile (R). The Reed-trained colt fought to a head win in his trial, with the second-fastest time of :17.787.

SS Calendar Girl (Finding Nemo-First Prize Robin by Mr Jess Perry) won the FL Lady Bug Stakes (R) last year at Remington Park and scored her second 2013 victory in the derby trials. The Bonifacio Almanza-trained SS Calendar Girl won the second of two trials by one-half length as the 6-5 favorite. Her time of :17.439 for 350 yards was the quickest mark.
