Reed Pierson and Brad Stevenson’s Sparky E Boy, second by a nose in the 2011 $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1), has the past-class edge against seven 4-year-old and older rivals racing 350 yards in the $25,000 Cypress Handicap Friday night at Los Alamitos.

Sparky E Boy (Hawkinson-YR Lucy Brown by Lanes Leinster) looks for his first win since taking the 2012 $69,840 Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge (G3) and may have found the spot to break his eight-race winless streak.

The 7-year-old gelding has three second-place runs in his latest four starts. He was second in the 2013 Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge and followed with a dead heat for second behind $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) winner and 2013 world champion Last To Fire in the $100,000 Go Man Go Handicap (G1).

After a slow start in the $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship and finishing eighth at 3-1 odds, the Paul Jones-trained Sparky E Boy finished a troubled second behind Grade 1 winner Chivalry SR in an allowance race on December 27.

Mesa Valley Farms LLC’s homebred Fols Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Sheza Jet Dash by Dash To Chivato) won last year’s $25,000 Cypress Handicap by 1 1/2 lengths and comes off a neck win in the $16,000 Anaheim Overnight Handicap, his only win since the Cypress Handicap. He won the 300-yard Anaheim with a late run to score his sixth win from 15 starts. The member of the Mark Skeen barn also has six second-place finishes and one third-place finish.

The Delbert Reed Trust and Dean Frey-owned BD Cruiser (Separatist-Streakin Debut by Streakin Six) is taking the class jump after a pair of allowance wins for trainer Dean Frey. He took a 350-yard allowance race by three quarters of a length in :17.580 and then won over 330 yards by the same margin in :16.834.

The Cypress is BD Cruiser’s first stakes appearance since a fourth-place run in the 2012 $236,400 Golden State Derby (G1).

Miguel Sanguino’s Chicks Special Angel (Chickspecialmongoose-CFF Plain Jane by Super Bowl Dash) makes her Los Alamitos debut after putting up a very consistent record spanning four years in the Northwest. The Juan Sanguino-trained mare reeled off 10-straight wins before finishing fourth in the $70,000 Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge in his latest start on September 1.
