Shue Fly's Best Return
Top Two from Shue Fly back in NMHBA Stakes
February 16, 2012
The top two finishers in the $236,364 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at long odds – First Blazin Love and Fury Of The Storm – look to go off at shorter odds when they start in the $110,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders Association Stakes (RG2) for 3-year-old state-breds on Sunday afternoon at Sunland Park.
Owned by Johnny Martinez, Lisa Saumell and Dwayne Johnson, First Blazin Love (Chicks A Blazin-Love At First Glance by First Down Dash) raced to his fourth win from five starts when he won his stakes debut in the Shue Fly at 9-1 odds. The Paul Jones-trained colt raced with the leaders and then pulled out to the half-length score in :19.155 for the 400 yards.
First Blazin Love scored wins last summer at Ruidoso Downs in his trials to the Mountain Top Futurity (R) and the Zia Futurity (RG1), but did not record a time fast enough to qualify for the finals of those races. He won his Shue Fly trial by an expanding 1 1/2 lengths in :19.764, while facing a stiff headwind.
S/M Cattle Export Co. and Jaime Dominguez’s Fury Of The Storm (Furyofthewind-Bubbles Bunny by Sail On Bunny) grabbed second place in the Shue Fly at 21-1 odds. He earned his spot in the Shue Fly when he won his trial by a length for his second career win from six starts.
Gary Kloppenburg’s homebred Sparklin Royal (Sixes Royal-Sparkling Ojos by Celadon) has been winless in her two starts at Sunland Park for trainer Carlos Sedillo after narrowly winning the Senorita Futurity (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque as the 19-10 favorite. She won the Senorita by a head before finishing fourth in her Shue Fly trial and ninth in a $36,000 allowance race for New Mexico-breds.
