Senor, Senorita at State Fair

Smafricate fastest to the Senorita Futurity.

September 21, 2012

The surprising Smafricate is the fastest qualifier to the Senorita Futurity (RG3) and the improving Balderinas Surprise heads the Senor Futurity (RG3) on Saturday afternoon during the New Mexico State Fair at The Downs at Albuquerque.

The Senorita Futurity is for fillies and the Senor Futurity for males. All are New Mexico-breds.

Owned by the Estate of breeder Jerry Lee, Smafricate (Streakaway Cash-Go Amongst Um by Pyromaniac) broke his maiden at 5-1 odds, with a neck win in :19.681 in his fourth start, the top time from two trials. He showed he could move up in his trial when he was third in a maiden race at The Downs at Albuquerque in his previous start for trainer Judy Bachicha.

The Jesus Marquez-owned and -trained Seis Of Hearts (Sixes Royal-Ritzy Flash by First To Flash) won the other Senorita trial in :19.733, the third-fastest qualifying time. She is also improving and may be ready to make a successful step up to the state-bred stakes division. After a second-place finish in her career debut, she won her Senorita trial by a nose at 8-1 odds.

Rogers Farms’ homebred Balderinas Surprise (Rabbits Rainbow-Miss Balderina by Celadon) should be dangerous after winning his latest two starts. The John Bassett-trained gelding was third in the By By JJ at Ruidoso Downs before winning a Ruidoso Downs maiden race and then taking his Senor Futurity trial by a neck in :19.867.

Paul Esquibel’s homebred A Special Pfind (Sixes Royal-Pfind The Cash by The Adamas) and Verona Vaughn’s homebred Saturday Nite Romeo (Dash Ta Fame-Hopeful Imp by Imprimatur) finished in a dead heat for second behind Balderinas Surprise and shared the second-fastest qualifying time of :19.918.

A Special Pfind is a maiden after seven starts, with three second-place finishes while Saturday Nite Romeo qualified for the New Mexico Breeders Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park.
