Senor Gold Solo Tops John Deere Los Al Challenge Trials

California-bred earns second straight victory with fastest qualifying time.

Anna and Rod MacPherson Jr.'s Senor Gold Solo got his second win in three starts on Saturday night on the way to posting the top qualifying mark for the $22,500-added John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Los Alamitos on Saturday, August 24, and vie for the winner's share of the purse and a starting spot in the $150,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) on November 9 during the Bank of Challenge Championships at Los Alamitos.

Saddled by leading trainer Paul Jones, Cesar DeAlba rode the Senior Solo colt to the top qualifying time of :17.459 over the 350 yards, after winning by 1 ¼ lengths. Anselmo Aguilar bred the gelding in California from the Takin On The Cash mare Takin Some Gold.

Coming off a third-place effort in the Ed Burke Juvenile Invitational (R), Tres Magicals broke her maiden in the third trial for owner/breeder Porfirio Carrasco. Jose De La Torre conditions the Tres Seis filly out of Fishes Proud, by Fishers Dash. Eduardo Nicasio was in the saddle to record the second fastest time of :17.502.

Intermountain invader Time For Jesse Lee made his first start outside of Idaho a winning effort in the final trial. The Mr Jesse Lee colt stumbled at the start, veered out and bumped but still recovered to win by head and post the third-fastest time of :17.647. Monty Arrossa saddled the homebred for Jim Walker. He has won five of seven starts this year.
