Chin Lee’s Sandys Jesse returns after winning the $85,000 Sunburst Stakes as the 2-1 favorite to take on 3-year-old New Mexico-breds in the $65,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders Association Stakes at SunRay Park on Sunday afternoon.

Sandys Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Sandys Fame by Dash Ta Fame) handled state-bred females in the Sunburst on April 13 and faces New Mexico-bred males in the NMHBA Stakes. She fought for the lead for most of the Sunburst before winning by a neck with a :17.073 time for 350 yards at Sunland Park.

The filly has shown success against the boys. She closed out her 2012 season at Sunland Park with a win in the NMHBA Stakes (RG2) and then was third against older state-breds in the Mesilla Valley Handicap (RG2).

Craig Joplin’s homebred Brotherman (Jesse James Jr-Tex Can by Bills Ryon) fits well after winning a $44,840 allowance race two starts ago. However, he will need to rebound for trainer Emmitt Burelsmith Jr. after finishing sixth in his sole start since that victory.

Currie Maben’s Jess Rueben James (Jesse James Jr-Nitros Cash by Dash For Destiny) is still a maiden for J. Aldavaz Jr. However, he has been second in four of his latest five starts. In his latest start, he was overlooked at 32-1 odds in the Animas Stakes, but came through with a second-place finish.
