June 3, 2012

David and Ross Hinkins’ Rex Hill picked up his third consecutive victory on Sunday as the Jesse James Jr colt held on to capture the $167,700 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park. Ricky Ramirez rode for trainer Carlos Sedillo and stopped the timer at :17.387 for 350 yards.

Sent off as the 5-2 second choice after posting the fastest time in the trials, Rex Hill earned $78,810 for the neck victory and pushed his bankroll to $113,119. The colt, who was bred by MJ Farms, suffered his only defeat in his racing debut when he finished third in a trial to the New Mexican Spring Fling Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park. He then came back to win the New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) for horses that missed out on the rich final. With his victory in a trial and the final of the New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity, he has three wins in four outs.

Rex Hill is one of four stakes winners for the Mr Jess Perry stallion Jesse James Jr and one of four winners from as many starters produced by the winning Dash Ta Fame mare Tangled Vines.

Gary Thompson’s homebred Tombstone, a gelding by Get Down Perry and the 2-1 favorite, put in a game effort but had to settle for second with Esgar Ramirez up for trainer Sedillo, who saddled the first two finishers.

Another Jesse James Jr runner, Jess Rueben James, finished third for breeder and owner Currie Maben.
