Reagal Eagle Tops Rainbow Futurity Day 1

One Famous Eagle colt tops first day of Rainbow Futurity trials.

July 4, 2013

The Blane Wood stable, which won eight of 25 trials to the Ruidoso Futurity (G1), maintained their hot streak by sending out two of the five qualifiers to the $1 million Rainbow Futurity from Thursday’s trial-filled 13-race card at Ruidoso Downs.

The $1 million purse is an all-time record for the Rainbow Futurity.

Under a new format for the Rainbow Futurity, the horses with the five fastest times from Thursday’s trials join the horses with the five-fastest times in Friday’s 13-trial program in the 400-yard Rainbow Futurity on July 21.

The Wood qualifiers are second-fastest qualifier Belle Helene and third-fastest qualifier BP Its My Policy.

Lana Merrick’s Belle Helene, a $75,000 Ruidoso Yearling Select Sale purchase, cruised to a 2-length win in the sixth trial while stopping the timer in :19.403 with Ricky Ramirez aboard. The daughter of Valiant Hero and 2004 Rainbow Futurity winner Thewayouwantmetoo is owned by a granddaughter of the legendary hall of famer Walter Merrick, who owned, bred and trained All American Futurity winner Easy Jet and owned and bred his All American Futurity winning daughter Easy Date.

Belle Helene was winless in two starts at Sam Houston Race Park, but has blossomed with two wins from two Ruidoso Downs’ starts. She won her Ruidoso Futurity trial by one length with a time not fastest enough to qualify for the Ruidoso Futurity.

“She is bred really well and got it together today,” said Wood. “She has figured it out and maturing at the right time.

Bill Price’s homebred BP Its My Policy made the finals by finishing second to Nahum and Rosella Prieto’s fastest-qualifier Reagal Eagle.

A son of champion and leading sire One Famous Eagle, Reagal Eagle won the second trial by 1 1/4 lengths over BP Its My Policy. Reagal Eagle was timed in :19.242 while BP Its My Policy stopped the clock in :19.443.

Reagal Eagle won his maiden for trainer Eduardo Gonzalez with the trial win under Larry Gamez. The $17,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase was ninth in the West Texas Juvenile and then second in his Ruidoso Futurity trial.

BP Its My Policy, like Belle Helene, is finding his top form for Wood during the lucrative summer futurity season at Ruidoso Downs. He made two starts at Remington Park this spring and finished third in each race.

“He just got beat in the trial,” said Wood. “I wish he had run in a race here before the trials. He really, really needed this race. I expect him to step up in the finals.”

Paul Blanchard’s GRC Justplainazoom raced to the fourth-fastest time of :19.507 with Felipe Garcia-Luna aboard.

GRC Justplainazoom showed improvement for trainer Paul Jones. The Azoom gelding was fifth in his Ruidoso Futurity trial behind the top-two qualifiers One Quick Eagle and Strategic Weapon in his only other start.

J and M Racing and Farm’s Chief Tistarosa B, with Esgar Ramirez up, won the third trial by one-half length in :19.515, the fifth-fastest time. The Kristopher Cordova-trained gelding was second in his Ruidoso Futurity trial when he made his career debut.
