Lorenzo Cano’s My Big Chief, a 4-year-old gelding by Get Down Perry, got up to capture Saturday’s $37,000 New Mexico Breeders Championship (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque. Ridden by Flavio Lozano and trained by Robert Rivera, My Big Chief prevailed by a half-length and clocked 440 yards in :21.527 as the 7-2 second choice.

This victory improved My Big Chief’s record to 19-7-2-3 with earnings of $143,196. My Big Chief, who was bred by Chad McCallum out of the Major Rime mare Majorly Easy, is now a two-time stakes winner after also taking last year’s New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (RG3) at Albuquerque. The gelding has won four of his five career starts at the track.

Four-time stakes winner Osbaldo, the odds-on favorite, finished second and went over the $300,000 mark in career earnings. Aful Alibi, winner of the Tommy “Duke” Smith Handicap (RG2) at SunRay Park, finished third.
